Holidays bring back memories for me of hurtful words. I always heard it said 'sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me.'

Well words hurt me deeply! It's tough to forgive, yet I have had to take a look at my own words. Shamefully, I haved responded in a 'fight fire with fire'approach.

Do you struggle with holidays and anniversaries of such events?

While holidays can bring out the best of people (I'm sure a lot more charity work is done around them as opposed to during normal days of the year), it also seems to bring back painful memories. I go away for college, and whenever I come home for the holidays I'm reminded of what my "friends" said did my senior year - or rather, the lack of what they said and did. While my immediate family is great to me, I always get the impression when I see them around Christmas and Easter that they are family only by marriage - just yesterday I saw two cousins my age and we didn't say a word to each other the entire day!

The first thing you should do is talk about what was said with everyone involved, see if you can patch things up. If you can't (and let's face it - sometimes that is the case), see if you can keep your mind off of what happened. You will eventually have to deal with what was said and what happened, but in my experience it's best to do this at a time when you aren't fully charged emotionally to start out with (if you are, chances are you won't be willing to listen to any advice given or help offered).

Thank you for posting, please keep us filled in on how you're doing. Painful memories are very hard to carry, sometimes we just need a little help bearing the weight!
