When I was a senior in high school, I was embarassed in my gym class during a cruel game of kickball. To make matters worse, the person I considered my best friend at the time encouraged it all by laughing along with everyone. Since then, I have had chronic depression managed by a number of things, most of which involve my faith life and relationship with God in some form. However, the battle is not over yet. I am constantly questioning the motives of my friends, and whethor or not they will abandon me like before. I deal with similiar self esteem issues on a daily basis. As you can tell, a single betrayal has greatly affected my daily life. Assuming my high school life was different, that I wasn't the loser whose "friends" made fun of him behind his back, I would never hit rock bottom, and while I may have continued to go to church, it certainly wouldn't have the same meaning as it does for me today. I know it sounds really tough, especially if you recently went through something like this, but I've found it's best to consider the postive things that come out of negative experiences like this . Outside of religious environments (such as a retreat or with my friends from my faith life), I have found I'm in the best mood when I think about things like this.
