the close of October marked it as the 4th deadliest month for US and coalition forces since the conflict began 4 years ago. The political spin on this is almost out of control. The war in Iraq is definately a "hot button" issue in the upcoming election, but the interesting thing is that many sorces say that the increase in terrorist activity in the region is meant to sway the election. The idea is to cause enough trouble over there that the American people will elect representation that will side with a troop draw-down and complete removal to follow. In my opinion, Iraq is working very hard to be able to 'do it on their own", but I don't think they are there yet, and still need help. Being THE world super power comes with some responsibility. Deposing their leader comes with some responsibility, and the moral stance that we have taken since the founding of this country comes with some responsibility. In my opinion, to leave now would be very irresponsible.

Personally, this is my view on the situation:

-It's useless to argue anymore whether or not we were justified in going to war in Iraq. What matters now is should the troops be pulled.
-Our presence in Iraq has done nothing but make more enemies who are even more fed up with the U.S. If the various terrorist organizations didn't like us to begin with, do you think they'll enjoy our presence in their home nation? Didn't think so. So saying that we are preventing further terrorist attacks is just silly.
-Iraq will be burdened by attempted take overs and civil war for a very long time - this is a very hostile area we are talking about. Aren't there just yet? Try won't be for a long time.
-We have other places where we can put our resources to much better use. No one talks about New Orleans anymore, and if you were to go into the Appalachian Mountain region you would be shocked by the amount of poverty that exists. Granted, we may not need military men there, but the war is costing us money that can go elsewhere.

The way I see it, we need to ween Iraq off of our military forces. It is only through this way that they will learn how to defend themselves. I'm not saying we shouldn't provide aid should they need it, but having us constantly there is benefiting no one.

Thank you so much for your reply. It makes for a much more interesting forum when there is more than just one opinion shared. There has been a great deal of thought put into your opinions, and that is another great thing. It is plain to see that you are not just another hot-head spewing junk about something that you know nothing about, and don't care about the "finer" details of the situation. this too is greatly appreciated. I agree with you in several points. First, our military should not be used to solve poverty anywhere. Secondly, I have travelled through much of Appalachia, and agree with you that the poverty in that part of the country is horrible, but the same could be said for many areas in the US and the world. However, I don't think that pulling the troops out of Iraq and using the money saved there to help the impoverished is the answer. There have been extremely poor people in this country for a long time. Again and again, different groups have thrown money at them; whether in an attempt to help them or appease the guilt they were feeling is not clear, but what is clear, is the fact that it has not worked.
There are those who would debate the reasons that we went into Iraq, and with sound reasoning for their choices. But, I know from first hand knowledge that life is better for the average Iraqi citizen now than it was 5 years ago. It is true that we are not finished over there, and it will be a LONG time before this is "over", but the Iraqi government is making great strides to take military control of their own destiny. there are many areas in Iraq that are completely controlled by the Iraqi military. They have come a long way in a very short period of time. We have to work on an "exit stratagy", but we must not leave too soon. this needs to be a victory, not only for Iraq, but for the memory of the ones who gave themselves to this. Blessings,
Jerry
