Everyone is bugging me about My Space . com. What's the big deal anyway? Is it really so awful?

While MySpace can be a great tool - it can help you get in touch with old friends who you haven't seen in a while, for instance - it also allows sexual predators a whole new way to get new victims. People will lie about who they really are.

A similiar site to myspace is facebook. For those of you who don't know, facebook is a social network (similiar to myspace) made for college and high school students. Again, the thing you have to be careful for with facebook is that it can lead to stalkers. I don't know about you, but if someone (who I never knew) came up to me and said they knew my interests, favorite bands, course schedule (all things you can post on facebook), I would be scared, to say the least.

Again, these two networks original intents were not bad by any means. If you really do want to have a myspace, facebook, or be a member of any online social network (and I must confess, I am!), make sure you do the following things:
1. Don't become friends (or accept friend invitations) with anyone you don't know personally. I can not stress this enough, if a predator were to become "friends" with you, that is the first step down a painful road.
2.) Check you privacy preferences. Check off the option that says "Make my profile viewable to friends only". Just because someone isn't friends with you, doesn't mean they can't access your profile. I happen to have a number of friends who use myspace, and while I don't have a myspace myself, I am able to find and track down a number of people, what they like to do, etc. The amount of personal information that users will make available to the public (sometimes unknowingly) is alarming.

I hope this helps - Social networks can be a fun thing - you just have to make sure you play everything safe.
