My friend is hooked on kiddie porn. He wants to look it up on my computer. I don't want to get in trouble.

He says there's no way to trace it. I say I can get in big trouble because we're both over 16 and it's my computer.

What should I do? I need your help.

Dear Scared:

Thanks for being brave enough to post this question. I am sure that other forum readers may also having similar problems.

Your friend is very, very wrong! This is against the law and your activity is most definitely traceable! Furthermore, the fact that you are over 16 means that you will recieve maximum penalties for this illegal behavior. Internet access records are stored on the equipment at the Internet Service Provider (ISP), and your local computer stores a record of all sites and files viewed. There are special tools to reveal this information, even after you are convinced it has been erased. Believe me, I am in the computer security business, I deal with this every day. Your ISP may review your internet access and decide to forward the information to the police. The ISP wants to stay in business, and does not want to be accused of supporting illegal sites on the Internet, so they will be very cooperative with the authorities. The F.B.I. has even set up sting operations with K.P. sites, where they can trace and bust people who access the illegal content.

What you should do:

1. Don't let your friend use your computer any more. For any reason. You are responsible for everything and anything that happens to or with your computer, so you need to protect it like you would protect your car. Would you loan your friend your car if you knew he might do something illegal, and you would get blamed, lose your car, and possibly wind up in jail?

2. Get some help for yourself. This type of behavior is very addictive, and it is a trap with hidden teeth. Once you experience it, you keep craving just a little bit more, and a bit more and...by the time you realize the addiction trap is sprung, it is too late. This type of behavior is not "broken" without outside help and accountability. That means that you need to talk to someone you trust, and admit you have done something wrong, and ask for some help. There is some good online help at - http://www.porn-free.org/ - but this is no substitute for a relationship with someone you trust enough to hold you accountable to do the right thing. Don't walk the tightrope alone.

3. Get some help for your friend. Go to someone you trust, and get some help with talking to your friend. Often people who crave this type of activity have been victims of abusers when they were young, and still have deep pain. Your friend needs serious counseling and accountability, as there is no good thing at the bottom of the roller coaster ride that your friend is on.

4. Get some help for your computer. K.P. sites and other P. sites are sources of spyware, viruses, and other malware that can infect your computer. Download a free copy of "Ad-aware" from Lavasoft - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ and scan your machine to see if your computer has an infection. If it does, run the included removal tool, reboot the machine and scan again to see if the previously removed spyware reinstalls itself. If it doesn't, you might be good to go. If it does, then seek help from a computer shop or professional who deals with spyware removal.
